im torn on getting a aimara. i got a hoplias prognatus and hes a intriguing fish more active then i expected. im toying with getting a aimara for ultimate exp. question to you guys is it worth the cost?? and y

Could we some pics of your prognatus?

Whether a fish is worth the price is a very subjective question and really only you can decide whether you think it's worth the money, it depends what your looking for, have a look around the many many threads on MFK. I personally do think mine are worth the money I paid for them. I have an interest in this type of fish and enjoy watching them and learning about their behavour and biology. For me, I don't think an Asian Aro is worth the price they go for, although I can appreciate other people do because of there interest in that particuler fish.

A fish is always worth what you are willing to pay for it not what others feel they are worth. Different people apply different values to what they have and the amount money available differs.

aimara are great fish and are an extreame end of the scale of aggresion in captive freshwater fish, this tends to be the reason people buy them. They aren't as rare as they once were and not difficult to get hold of. When I did get my first aimara I had a very odd fealing of contentment with my fish stock, a feeling that I would never need to buy another fish, that of course changed eventually. ;)

^^^ Agreed. In the end it's all up to you. I can tell you from my own experience that my Aimara is probably the most entertaining and satisfying fish i've ever kept. They are an amazing predatory fish.

thanks for the input i hear alot of people say the same thing, i have like 4 tanks running with everythin from tigs, to cichlids,to cichla to bichirs. i wanna downsize and keep one fish that i can really enjoy

I'm hoping the prices will come down. Right now they are just out of my comfort level but I understand why someone would pay that much. The good thing is they seem to hold their value or even increase in value over time so if you ever sell it you should easily get your money back!

Just do it

si, get one! I too felt that I tried it and I will never have to guess "what if". Sabes que, one more thing I do not need to do before I die! Own the most aggressive fresh water fish. I do not miss the money i paid.

I aquired my first H. aimara about a month ago. So far so good Ive only had my hand grabbed once. If you what activity in your tank keep them with large characins such as Pacu. The aimara is very territorial and will attack anything that gets on its turf.
