i agree. some fish naturally prefer fast flowing, river-like water, while some prefer still pools.

Or higher temps then compared to lower temp waters. Or, i just use it to break surface area.
 
It's not necessary. That's really up to you but bubbles don't really produce oxygen. It's the gas exchange by surface movements it creates that does.
 
what would you suggest for increasing air flow and surface disruption? i run two FX5's in my 130 gallon but i dont think they quite cut it, they filter very well, but the out flow isnt as strong as i would like it to be.
 
You can also use a powerhead
 
so an air stone and air pump wouldnt really help alot?

Im sure it would help a lot if you got the right air stone and pump. But in that price range you almost might as well get a powerhead.

However I don't understand how two FX5's on a 130 doesn't supply enough surface agitation. Cant you adjust the outlets higher towards the water surface?
