I have a shop air compressor laying around. I was wondering if i put a couple filters to filter out oil and such and a regulator. Would there be any problems running the air in my tanks.
Thanks.

You would have to set it up to where its safe for human consumption. Other than that, it works, and a constant running of a compressor is noisy and costly

you could buy a very nice air pump for what it will cost to operate the compressor 24x7. It would probably burn it out pretty quickly because it would probably never shut off. Filters don't really need high pressure, they need high volume.

What PSI is the comp rated too? If its quite hefty it would make more sense to get a couple of old welding acetylene bottles and fill them with comp air from the compressor. Then you can use old welding regs (well cheap) to bubble the air into the tank. Depending on the pressure you can charge the bottles too and the low rate, for smallish tanks a bottle could last a week plus. Then swap 'em over and recharge the other. That way the comp works like it should and doesnt burn out, and its not tied up if you need it for something else.

its a 20g tank like this onehttp://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=577if i rember right i can charge it up to 300 i think with out looking i will also use it for a few other things it takes about 10 15 min to fill im thinking depending on how manny tanks i use it on and how manny other things i use it on it shouldnt run that often im just woundering if 2 filters will be enough or do i need to use more the only thing im worryed about is oil getting in the tanks
thanks for all your replys so far

Get a good oil separator and run a test with some airstones in a bucket of water (for backpressure), you may be surprised how fast it leaks down (spec.s say max.press.155psi and it's a 20g tank).

Check the water surface in the bucket for oil accumulation (us e abright lite and look at glare for a rainbow effect) and as a last test ...taste it. Hey, your going to put your fish in it so it better be safe. If your not willing to taste the water, walk away from the project now :D.

If I really needed to suppliment oxygen into a tank I'd probably look into just getting an O2 tank and build a reactor, much the same as adding CO2 into a planted tank. Only time I ever seen this done is in Tom Barr's 1600G tank. But I dont understand what any benefit an actual air compressor would have... noisy and not very energy efficient along with atmospheric air not having a whole lot of O2 in it.

Okay, so if the compressor cylinder is 20 US gallons and its filled with air compressed to 155 psi, at 21 degrees C, that translates to ~798 liters (~210 gallons) of air at atm pressure. So at a flow rate of 1 liter a minute it would take about 13 hrs to empty the cylinder. A liter a minute does my 55 gallon, but obviously that depends on your stocking levels, BOD ect ect...

What size is your tank?

right now 480,3-50,2-40,2-30 a few 10s and 3-rubber maids i was thinking about putting in a pond like they say go big or go home im doing both i already have the compressor running so i was thinking of just taping into it thanks for all your replys
