I have a drilled 180 with 1 and 1/4 inch lines draining to my sump(55 gallon)I have the drain lines draining into one compartment and then overflows at the top to the bio ball chamber..Anyways the lines bringing water to the first chamber have air in them also which creates loud bubbling ,I have since put a filter at the end of both lines to reduce the size of the bubbles so its not as loud...Now grant it with the doors closed on my stand its barely audible, but I wanted to know if there is a way to not introduce air into the sump and stop the gurgling completely???I thought I read somewhere someone used a ball valve and gated it down and reduced the bubbling but I cant figure out how that would do anything.I dont want to slow down my turnover rate....Im using tubing for the lines ,its not hard pvc setup....

thats really odd...that you have tubing and all thats sound is still happening... i have a 180 also and i had the same problem, difference is the plumbing... i used pvc 2inch & 1 and half.... so that being said... i filled my overflow boxes with bio balls 1inch... half way in the chamber...made sure filtration sock is on correctly... and fixed my problem.... but....!, it seldomly still does it... reason there is air going through with water in the plumming.. thats why you shouldnt have a problem like i have.... because of tubing vs. pvc!! thats in my own opinion though and only advice i can give through my expierience.. best of luck brotha....;)

Try something like this.

:iagree: That set up is basicly a syphon rather than a standpipe design that works as a drain and won't draw in any air so they work a LOT quieter.

but if you dont have the hole ,its like 1/8 of an inch,in the standpipe the standpipe would not work correctly...I think the problem is ,is that the inside diameter of the tubing is 1 1/4 and the stand pipe is slightly smaller,so when the water drops through the bulkhead there is approx 1/4 inch from the wter stream coming in to the inside diameter of the tubing and when it gets to the end of the tube it "burps"out the air...Like I said ,I cant hear it when the doors of the stand are closed, onlywhen open...I just thought maybe someone had a solution..Its not the standpipe, thats set up correctly....
