Do you need a lot of air on your bichir tank? Lots of water movement causing the top of the water to ripple or air is not that important since they are airbreather? I have a huge airpump (Airtech 95) and i'm running 5 airstones and causing the water to be very busy (whirlpoool and tidal wave effect - seems too much for them). I was thinking of taking it off so they have some quite and steady water. I'm also running an eheim 2180 with no spraybar and the outlet is in the water level so impact on water ripple is not significant. There's only two adult ornate pair in a 6ftr tank.

A bit overkill for the airstones bud! honestly, bichirs don't need the same amount of oxygen such as aros. Bichirs are tolerable to oxygen levels. But of course, the more the better. Just saying that bichirs don't need that much! A good filter with big circulation is the only thing bichirs need.
