Air powered pvc-scrubbie filter?

Vertical 3 or 4" diameter PVC pipe...put scrubbies in it...pump air through it
Plausible idea or destined to fail?

When I read this I think of a foam filter except its housed in PVC? If so why not just use a foam cube filter like these...

Similar idea to a box filter, or the diy nalgene filters so would work but why when other things out there? or just a diy sponge filter would work well too.
