air pump filtraration

How does a sponge filter work when there is only an air pump in it? I just made a homade bottle filter and I dont get how the air filters? does it move water around???? Thanks you beacause I dont get it!!!!:)
 
Sponge filter works from air pressure. The air pump pulls water in through the sponge on the outside and releases it through the tube.
 
I cut a larger hole at the bottom and put a sponge in it so water could get in... Can you please tell me if this works and how this stuff works in detail:)...
 
thank you, that helps a lot:)... Do you think my 2 filters will be effective(I made a other one and i will post pics in a min)...
 
Therer is a a large slit at the bottom of them for intake(The slit is most of the very bottom)... I have gravel, scores, filter padfs and kitchen sponges in them...
