Air pump/stone when using canister filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've just switched from a couple of penguin 350's w/bio wheels to Rena XP3 canisters. I had surface agitation before w/the wheels, but nothing now.. Thought I'd ask. Thanks.

I think its always best to have at least one airstone, even if you have plenty of flow. an airstone keeps the water from "stratifying" or seperating into layers & keeps it well mixed. Surface agitation is also a bonus. Stratification can cause the water at the bottom of the tank to be colder, stagnant & low in oxygen.

Howdy,

I have been running canisters for decades, and never needed an airstone... just position your spray bar above the water level, that'll aerate plenty! BTW: Don't aerate if you have plants!

x2 on this . . . if you position the spray bar above the water level, it creates surface agitation, which serves the same purpose as an airstone.

I don't do that because I have plants, and also because it makes a fair amount of noise . . . but you can do it
