I have a 75 gallon With a Fluval 405 and a K750 power head. Both are well below the water level so surface agitation is low. I know to in order to provide dissolved oxygen into the water there needs to be some for of surface agitation.
would a power head angled up toward the surface be sufficient enough. I threw an air stone in there with a whisper air pump today but im not a huge fan of air stones.

what kind of setup are you guys running to provide DO?

The reason for the question comes from my fire eel. Occasionally the fish appears as if its gasping for air, I have a peacock eel in the tank as well and he breathes just fine.

The fish eats and swims around, and these symptoms happen before and after feedings making me think that it is not due to over feeding. Ive had the fish for about 5 months now maybe longer.

put a ATI sponge filter instead of the airstone it will not only provide surface agitation but also bio and will not clog over time like normal airstones which will cause back pressure on your air pump diaphrams.

Purchase a powerhead with a surface sucking airline attachment. Problem solved.

Theres an aqua clear 30 in the tank i have the line for it and the little ball valve to regulate the air flow. Problem with it is its amazing at sucking mystery snails out of their shells and blowing them all over the tank. Pardon my graphic detail. I built a cage for it but im not a huge fan of the aqua clear power heads.

are you using a surface sucking power head?

That would work.
Some powerheads have tubing to grab air from above the water line and will aerate as it pumps water out.

Anything that agitates the surface will help O2 get in and CO2 out so if you don't like the air stone, the power head will work fine.
