Are air stones needed with rays? I am going to be setting up a 210 with a eheim 2262, FX5 and either a 2217 or ecco 2236.

it wont hurt but you should be ok I would think

What are thoughts about the 2217 or the 2236? I am just going to hook up the surface extractor to this. I think that the 2236 only uses 5w opposed to the 20w used by the 2217.

as you will be feeding a lot, they consume a lot of oxygen for digestion so i would add airstone (unless you make a million bubbles without them ofc :))

if your gonna use an airstone why not a large sponge filter atleast your gonna have some bacteria growing and there's less pressure on your air pump

i always run a few sponge filters with my rays.... i even had a airstone as well....it cant hurt to have them

Has anyone used the oxygen diffusser from eheim? It attaches to the filter output and adds air with the water. I thought that this would at least be one less tube going to my tank.

its just a venturi it would be fine to use....

I just hooked up a Hiblow 80 to 3 feet of airstones. The air curtain is really impressive and it creates a lot of circulation in the tank (320 gal). The rays also like to play in the bubbles. The only problem is that I seem to have gotten a green algae bloom somehow. There must be sunlight hitting the tank during the day and with the extra oxygen, it grew like crazy. I can hardly see my fish! I'm going to shut the lights off for a couple of days and see if it clears up; also more water changes. And of course close the blinds.
