Air Stones?

Im still kind of new to this.. but I went to a friends house and he has and oscar, like me and he has air stones , and he said that they are needed in the tank... i dont have any in my tank but i have a over the back filter unit that has a water fall of an inch or so (it makes bubbles)... should i get an air stone or is that just to make it look "cool"... sorry again for the n00b question

high levels of oxygen are better for fish but if you dont have a big tank the water outlet from the filter will be fine.

One advantage of air stones - the bubbles move a whole lot of water from the bottom to the top of your tank. Even in a good sized tank, a couple of air stones can keep water circulating in areas where the filter doesn't. So can a power head - all a matter of preference, I guess.
