I love my xp3 filters and they are a great bang for there buck. Well one of mine is flowing strong but about every 10 seconds the flow slows down dramaticly for like a second... Not a big deal but it is kind of anoying. The canister is right next to the aquarium on the same platform the aquarium sits on(a big like 10 ft thing across the room conected to the wall(There are 2x4s under it beacause a 75 gallon is on it)... it started doiong this after i rinsed the media out and took the filter apart(the turtle is very messy and the flow rate was like half and you would know why if you looked how discusting the inside of the canister was)... well I am guisuing not having the canister under the tank has to do with this. i have put cups of water in the thing you unscrew to add watwer to it on the intake... i have dobne that a few times beacause i think air is trappeds in the filter... If you think it is something difrent please mention it... Thanks:)

I used to just unclip two of the clips on the same side for a second to remove air. Gets a little water spilled around but not to much and easy to clean up. Definetly will get the air outa the filter.

not sure if you fixed the XP3 sucking in air yet but one thing that has fixed mine in the past was making sure your 4 screws that sit right under the 4 clamps are not loose, these screws hold the two parts of the motor housing together and if they get loose that can let air into the system. At-least its what fixed it for me, hope this helps some i know it gets annoying hearing these filters suck in air and shoot out bubbles all day.

Check the impeller o-ring to, the way the rena's are if it's worn it'll suck air in and you'd see masses of bubbles, the gasket kit is easy to replace and cheap.

The way I make sure no air being trapped after cleaning is to fill the canister with tank water all the way to the top, shake it a few times, and then mount/push the top motor housing on it to overflow the excessive water. Obviously you should have something to catch the water or just do the filling in a sink as I always do. Hope that helps.

Guess youll just have to use the filter the way it was designed and put it below the tank.

If your problem is trapped air what really helped me was putting a small bit of saran wrap on top of the inlet pipe assembly and then placing the inlet pipe cap back on. I used to get air in all the time and the resulting gurgling noise from the expulsion of air drove me bonkers.
