While I was cleaning my glass with my mag float my 14" male Jag hit it hard. He swam to the other side of the tank and started "puffing" blood out of his gills.

It only lasted about 30 seconds, but it was quite a bit of blood. He appears to be back to normal now, and shows no visible signs of injury. In all my years keeping cichlids I've never come across this before.

Have any of you experienced anything similar with your fish and what was the outcome?

I'm guessing the blood was probably from inside his mouth, maybe tore it slightly depending on how he bit down on the mag float, does it have soft edges?

blood + water usually looks a lot worse than it is.. it probably was not that much blood..
i would say if he is back to normal then hes fine.

I'm sure he's good to go. I always wonder how fish recover when I yank the hook out of them while fishing. The second I throw them back into the water they swim off like nothing happened. A while back I read somewhere that fish tissue grows back 2-3 x faster than mammal tissue.

I've heard similar things, too. I was once told that a fish's mouth is nothing like a person's mouth. It has very thick tissues, not as much nerves, made to pick up and sort through gravel adn sand all day. Probably the only thing on a fish's body that isn't fragile. When I was a kid, I was fishing with an uncle, and I asked him about hooking them, he told me that. He was not one to tell kids what they want to hear, so I think he probably had looked into it himself.

Funny thing just happened during a water change 20 mins ago... my male Jag hit the net I was using so hard he tore his mouth open and ruined the net. He stopped bleeding within a minute or two and he should be fine.

I was catching them to vent them.

I have had males hit other things so hard it tore their mouths open in the past too. They heal quickly. I even had one Jag injure a gill and bleed for quite awhile, but recovered very quickly the next day.

Keep an eye on him over the next day or two just to be sure
