Maroochy Australia
Heya ppl.

I'm a fish keeper, hobby breeder and a full time aquarist. At the moment have a couple albino natives. A number of Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) and One Sleepy cod (Oxyeleotris lineolatus) as well as some leucistic barra and sleepys, I have been trying to value them, though the many people i have spoken too have been quite cagey about what they are worth, particularly as they are traders. Would greatly appreciate some feedback from hobbiests and ppl in the ornamental trade on what they believe these natives would be worth. The albino Barra (gold and platinum) vary in size from 350g to 1.4kg (280 - 500mm) and there are a number of them. The leucistic vary in the same size range and there are a couple of them. The albino Sleepy cod is around 380g (260mm), just One. The leucistic Sleepy cod vary between 300 and 400g (200 - 300mm), there are a couple of them.
If not sure on to the dollar value, ball park figures would be awesome. I do understand, its a matter of asking a price and someone will pay it if they want it, though dont want to give someone a bargain if i do ever sell them.

Regards Ged

Pics!!!!

lol, I knew that would be the general concensus to begin. Get your pics up please! lol. It'll take me a little time, though I will post some for viewing pleasure, just bare with me. Thanks guys.

Here are prices from an australian ad from last year. Personally I wouldn't buy them at any price, just not my thing but you will find people with the scratch who are willing to spend it. I would say these are fair prices for fish of that size. As for the sleepy cod? If it was mine I would be asking $150-300 for them. You will probably find a bigger market for the sleepies as more people can house them long term.

35cm albino $800 o.n.o
37cm albino barra $850 o.n.o
42cm pied barra $900 firm
42cm albino barra $1000 firm
75cm platinum white $3500
46cm pied with gold patch $1950

Thanks heaps masone; I have noticed some pretty extreme prices in the states for different variations of albino barra, like upto $30000+ but then I'm guessing it is hard to export there through customs. I initially thought this was a typo and they meant 3000 though saw the prices in a cpl places.

Cheers Ged

I understand that this is an old thread but i am interested in following up to see how you went with selling your albino/platinum barra. I currently hae a few in a large pond/dam with vary in size from 60cm + and would be very curious to know the present value of such fish. Any info anyone could shed would be appreciated. Also is there even a market for fish of this size in Australia?

Bob always had people asking to buy the gold and plat in his shop but very few kkepers in Cairns who are willing to pay for them. I'd say the above prices still hold true, always harder to move larger fish on though. If you are willing to ship and can do it reliably then the Sydney/Bris market is parobably your best bet. If you shoot me some pics I can pass them on and see what interest there is down south/gauge prices.

Barra are not my thing but have a few friends who culture them commercially both for stocking(have to follow strict genetic guidelines and colourmorphs are very rarely seen) and for growout for table fish which are bred for growthrates and are an inbred domestic strain. These growout fish are the source of the colourmorphs, usually get a few each year @ 50mm to 100mm. Last year traded 20 Cichla monoculus @ 7cm for 12 assorted, lost 9 to strep(which seems to be endemic at this source) when converted to fresh. Traded 2 surviving piebalds and 1 melanistic for 2 adult Silver Aros. Year before got them for free had to pay freight, sold 2 albinos pink eyes for $500 ea. The rest carked it when pond rolled over in winter hailstorm. Year before traded 6 assorted for a pair of Tems. This should give you some idea of their actual value, to freight a 60+ plus fish south to a buyer would cost most of its value. One of the interesting aftermaths of cyclone Yasi was the number of cage fish which escaped have seen pics of dozens of colourmorphs caught by rec and commercial fishermen cant be that rare lol.
