Bichirs are air breather. They have a modified swim bladder that acts as a lung. Yes bichir have poor eye sight.

I am fairly new to Bichirs, but once I am into things I tend to obssess over them...

So I do know a few things... One of them is that the air-gulping is normal, and is why many recommend you keep your water level down a couple inches.

The eyesight, I couldn't tell you.

HTH

they smell there food =D its kinda cute lol

aiming the head upwards its smelling the water colum for any scent of food.
Polypterids by scientific defination have lungs which when young are used to augment saturated o2 from the water however as they age they become more
dependant on atmospheric O2
and yes they have poor eyesight and depend on their sense of smell to aquire foods-Anne

Keeping the water down a bit in a poly tank will also hopefully help preventing them from escape.

Completely normal, you basically described them. They also like to mind there own buisness and do their own thing, they tend to not have a clue what is going on if a fight breaks out between two other tank mates.
