Sexing and Breeding: Sexing Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps is not easy but the genital papillae on males sticks out a bit and lays flat on females – this is on large and mature fish. In nature, breeding occurs in tunnels made into the mud banks of rivers. When pond bred in Florida, Central or South America and Southeast Asia Sailfin Plecos are also known to build tunnels into mud banks. A very large aquarium would be required and it is mostly not possible though there have been reported to have been occasional accidental aquarium spawns.
