This is an albino redwood. It is completely dependent upon its mother tree, and is connected to it by the roots. They don’t grow large. It’s very anticlimactic because they sound super cool, but they just look like a dying redwood. They lack the green leaf pigment. Nevertheless a cool, rare morph.

Interesting - I didn’t know trees could come in albino forms. I guess it just doesn’t produce any chlorophyll?

Looks like just a dead bush to me! But who am I to question our resident albino redwood tree expert!

And in any case isn't chlorophyll to plants like blood is to us? How do green things survive without it?

That’s what I was thinking - they can’t photosynthesize without it. The Masked Shadow The Masked Shadow mentioned it was growing off of a mother tree so that might explain it.

Just looked it up. Plants can survive without chlorophyll, and indeed they are white without it. They get all their nourishment from nearby plants/trees. It is known as a Mycorrhizal relationship.

You learn something new everyday, lol.

Last year totally white anubias was the new sensation here. People paid a lot for them. A few month later they were all dead. Turned out they could only live rooted in some kind of sugar gel. Which makes them totaly unsuitable for any aquarium.
