hi, im new here and new to fish keeping.. would albino senegal bichirs mix with black ghost knife fish? some LFS says yes and others says no.. hmm.. i currently have a small pleco and some feeder fish.. i cant really tell the size of the tank.. does the size matter?

If you're planning on those 2 fish, then yes, size matters. Black Ghost Knives grow 16" to 20" so you're best bet for them would be a 75g tank (48" x 18" x 20"). Both will be fine together as they are not overly aggressive towards other fish unless they see it as a potential meal. An Albino Senegal averages around 8"-10" so they can actually go in a tank a bit smaller (recommend a 55g tank).

I have a 5+ year old Black Ghost Knife that is barely over 12" long that has never lived in a tank smaller than 125 gal and has always gotten weekly water changes... Rarely do we see them over 12" long in captivity... rarely do we see them over 12" long in the wild... Although I believe they "can" get 18" long... it's simply not true to suggest this is common in home aquariums... and I've never seen photographic evidence or verified reports suggesting it is common in the wild...

But even after all of that... I still agree they will be best kept in a 75 gal or larger tank... I also agree that a BGK and a Birch will go well together...

i have a 4" BGKF mixed with 4 5" senegals, unluckily one sen thought it was a worm.. i was horrified when i saw my BGK being dragged by my sen.

i took action and grabbed the BGK and seperated him. luckly he survived with a few bruises.

it really depends, but they are compatible. just put a lot of hiding caves for the BGK and dont keep your bichir hungry.

owh? i was told BGKs cant be kept with their own kind coz they produce weak electricity charges, so they confuse each other during meal time... does that mean i can only keep 1 BGK? i currently have 4 albino sens, 1 small pleco, 10 feeder fish..

That's a bad myth. BGK can't be together because they are territorial. So one would be best, but there are a few that house them in group to spread the aggression. It's a hit or miss with grouping them though. If you try this, there's a possibility of just ending up with one by the end. Electric Fish emit electrical discharge at different frequencies in order not to confuse one another. If they happen to be on the same frequency, they can just change it.

owh? naiss.. ultimate noob question for 2day.. do albino bichirs n normal coloured ones mix?

Yes...you can mix and match Polys, but it's best to keep the larger species separate from the smaller species. But even then, they will coexist when they are all around the same size.

thanx!! lol

i know its not a BGK but i do have a Clown knife and i have 3 4" senegals in the tank! and they never really mess with each other..

hope all the MFK advice helps you!
