Was at my LFS yesterday and they had 3 fish labeled as “albus tetra”. Never seen or heard of them before and couldn’t find much info on them. Has anyone on here heard of them before or kept them? I might go back and buy them if I can get some more info on them

I've never seen them before either but my curiosity got the better of me so I did some digging. Apparently they are classed as a giant hatchetfish, posh name triportheus albus. They grow to about 25cms so they are quite big.

And any "hatchetfish" that gets that big is probably quite deserving of the "proceed with caution" label, lol.

Lol all OP would need is to add a hatchet man figure to his tank and they'd be all set.

Those look like Triportheus albus. Beautiful fish.
I used to have a school of 5 Triportheus angulatus (the dusky narrow hatchetfish), that I boutht from a friend who frequented the Boston Aquarium Society meetings.
Beautiful, gentle, but very assertive (specially at eating time), and very prone to jumping. They are very hardy once established, but are said not to travel well because 'they are very nervous'. Mines got to about 4inches, which seems to be the maximum size. I have never seen them again.
An absolutely delightful fish to own, not often seen, almost exclusively by special order.
Lucky you, good luck with them, and thanks for posting!

Noticing quite a bit of aggression between the 3 of them especially during feeding time. I’ve been feeding them hikari micro pellets, nutrafin bug bites and blood worms it seems like they will eat just about anything lol. I’m going to find some more tank mates to add in with them and maybe that’ll lower the aggression between them. We’ll see I guess

Could always try silver dollars or something with a similar body shape/color. Might help with aggression making them think their shoal turned into a school.
