Within the past week or so, my anubias nana, barteri, and hastifolia have been getting covered with algae, brown and green. In addition to that, on a few of my hastifolia, the edges of the leaves have been turning black.

How can I safely get rid of the algae growth on the plants (without scraping it off - it doesn't work) and what kind of deficiency is causing the black edges?

The black edges are a red algae growing. Soon you will have BBA. The brown algae is a sign of either silicates or inadequate lighting. The green will always be present. Oto's will help get rid of the brown algae and green algae. A bleach solution dip works the best for BBA, but higher carbon dioxide or excel levels can help as well.

Thanks Wyld!
