I have a 185g aquarium with one 7" Pacu. This is temporary and he will be housed in a 300g aquarium later. Short version.. I was out of the country for 2 months and had a neighbor watch the house and was kind enough to keep my fish fed and perform regular maintenance. For some reason, this "regular maintenance" did not include regular water changes nor removing algae :screwy:

I'm planning to just tear down the tank and start from scratch. I am thinking about doing a bare-bottom tank or a very minimal amount of gravel. Does anyone have any views about whether or not a bare-bottom tank would be fine for a Pacu?

I think it would be fine. In fact I believe pacumom goes bare bottom on her tanks, and she has to be the most dedicated pacu keeper on here.

edit: I just realized you're new to the site, search for member pacumom and look at how she babies her pacu's, that should give you a good idea of the ideal way to take care of them

It is probably better that he left the algae in the tank instead of removing it! Algae processes the nitrates in your tank... you should probably be grateful for the algae keeping your water healthy. Unless your neighbor is an aquarium nut like the rest of us on this sight he probably didn't know to change the water unless you specifically gave him a schedule and requested him to do so.

Oh yeah... Welcome!

I checked out some of Pacumom's photos. That is incredible. Gives me some great ideas.

I should have never trusted a bird-lover with my fish.

Bare bottom is fine
