Anyone have suggestions for an algae eater in my 180 CA tank. It's growing out some Vieja and a GT at the moment. I would prefer something that doesn't get too large if possible, but won't die easily either. Any ideas? I was thinking a couple of bristlenose and just pray they don't get targetted.

well you could get a flagtail i love mine he is a great algae eater but you said not that big.. if you can handle their size i would get one for sure

My bristlenose plecos are fine, noone bothers them.

They are quite large though, male us near 5 inches female about 3, the largest fish i have with them is a redhead veija male at 11 inches and he pays them no intrest, he even lets them in his cave and he wont let anything else in there.

They also do a great job cleaning the algae, but they slow down a bit when they get bigger though.

Get yourself a nice Gibbyiceps/sailfin pleco. Males do get to 20" but even at full size are still ancious to farm the tank space. I know someone is going to say they produce alot of waste but that output was already in your tank that is now clean :) They are cheap and I think you will consider it an addition to your tank instead of just another pleco. To me the bristlenose are nice but too small for my tastes when you have 6ft of water and big fish as mates. They can handle themselves quite well when needed but most fish will leave them alone

What kind of algae is it? If you're not sure, you can google for pics of different kinds of algae found in aquariums. Most have very specific causes that can be remedied.

I believe it is just common brown algae from a bit of research. It's growing VERY quickly. One day there was nothing and now mostly everything has a coating of it on there. I think the new LEDs I have on the tank aren't bright enough.

Perfect. The largest fish in my tank currently is also a redhead, but only 5" or so. Thanks!

I do like flagtails, but I fear they get much too large and my tank is probably close to being overstocked already once things start to grow.

I absolutely hate common plecos, that's why I made this thread. Every time I have needed an algae-eater I have gotten one of these, and then it produced more waste than most of the other fish combined. Also, they ate copious amounts of my driftwood. I'm trying to avoid this again if possible. At least with a bristlenose I would assume much less would be eaten!

What about SAE? I realize the real deal is tough to find, but I have a very knowledgeable, asian LFS that I believe carries them. Has anyone tried to keep some of these guys with Vieja before?
