I've tried blacking out, but I just couldn't stick to it. I felt like my plants were already compromised by the algae & I didnt want to hurt them further. I'm sure I was just being paranoid, though.
I did have great success with adding Otocinclus catfish instead. They just eat the algae constantly. Friggin workhorse... The winning combo for me was: 2) Otto's, stop adding liquid ferts (now using root tabs only), and changing my lighting cycle to 4 hours on-1 hour off-4 hours on-1 hour off-2 hours on-12 hours off with moonlights. Scrubbing helps, but make sure you dont damage the plant leaves. If the plant is already turning thin & brown, just let the Otto get it so you don't make it worse.
BTW, I think my algae was initially caused by me adding liquid ferts with not enough light/CO2.
