Algae growth in Motaguense Aquarium

Hello my Motaguense has officially taken out his remaining tank mates ( Pleco & Mbuna), and I have noticed green algae growing on the rocks and plants much more than it used to. ( coincidentally shortly after the pleco has been gone) I have two questions.
1) Is this dangerous to my 5 inch Motaguense
2) Can this problem be solved without a UV sterilizer

It is not danergous to him and it can be slowed by eliminating some light

A UV will take out free floating algae, but the the stuff that grows on surfaces.
UV only takes out what flows past its bulb.
