In the past week or so I've noticed a small coating of algae forming along the inside of the glass running around my 90 gallon tank. I do 20% weekly water changes, and I monitor the pH and try to take exceptional care of the tank. Should I simply buy a pleco to eliminate the algae? Or is there some kind of algaecide that can get rid of it without the need of another fish. I'm afraid my 3 RBP's will tear into the pleco, the only one I can get at my LFP is around 3 inches. As for the actual algae its like small blades of grass.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Magnetic Brush or use a blade to scrap off the algae if the brush doesn't work.

Green Algae is not bad at all for you tank or Piranha . I use to not clean the back glass on my older piranha tank and let it be full of green algae , I thought it looked good helthy natural .

Heres one of my quick links-

Algae's gonna happen when protiens, water, and sunlight are combine. The differing types of Algae have their own causes and sometimes they are correctable. Plecos, other Algae grazing fish, and snails only feed on specific blooms not all types. IMO if the algae is obnoxious it's best to treat the cause then to buy fish which may complicate the issues with large amounts of waste or become usless and unwanted. I'm of the same mindset as Master K. - I don't scrub the green algaes from the rear of the glass, I like the look, and algae does release oxygen.

thanks for the info. im going to get a magnetic scrub brush, i may let the back panel algae go.. but the front glass algae just looks dirty and I don't like that

I have never kept piranha, but I have kept messy fish (currently have 2 puffers). I am curious to know what your nitrate levels are with 20% weekly water changes? I have to do 50% weekly on my 150 gallon Fahaka tank to keep the nitrates under 10. I do not have any algae.

I believe that the water is the issue here. Your water has excess "nutrients" (for lack of a better word) that are being used by the algae in your tank. I would suggest you increase the water changes and lower the time the lights are on. This, in time, should eliminate the algae problem you are having.
