So about 2 months ago I basically replaced everything in my fish tank because green algae took over. All was well for a while, until those little green spots started multiplying more and more. I've cleaned the tank, moved the tank out of direct sunlight, purchased otto cats, and perform pwc every week...STILL ALGAE. I'm getting concerned because its growing all over the leaves of my bamboo shoots and I just don't want it to take over the tank again. I read that you should avoid using chemicals to remove algae is it can harm fish/plants...so what should I do???

Green spots yes...I despise it too. You have to cut down on your feeding, and the light your tanks gets as well. Also, how often do you do water changes?

Hmm...bamboo shoots....TAKE IT OUT. It's not a plant that can be submerged, as it's not an aquatic plant. Don't listen to petsmart, they don't know what they are talking about. It will slowly die and rot in your tank, which will help your algae grow.

Set your lighting period to no more than 8 hours a day, probably less, maybe just a few hours while you are home.

If you have plants in there, and you use fertz, any excess will be consumed by the algae. If you are insistent on keeping the plant and fertilizers, then add a CO2 system, either DIY (good for about 20-40 gallons depending on how many you hook up) or a pressurized system.

Cut down on your feeding, take out excess food that's not eaten.

Clean your tank, and that should be it.

Yea plants that work underwater (i.e. Anachris) will take away the nutrients the algae needs; therefore decreasing algae growth.

UV Sterilizers are good for algae problems.

What size tank? What's in it for fish? Nitrate level? Do water changes more often too!

algae (and plants) see nitrates as fertilizer. you may have a nitrate problem. more waterchanges.

they do make algae destroyers, too. the one I have is safe for plants and animals, and only takes 1 teaspoon per 50 gallons every 3 days. Here's the brand name: Its called Algae Destroyer Advanced. made by Aquaqrium Pharmacuticles, INC.

i had cloudy water from algae, used tetra brand algae control and cleared it up in a couple hours.it was only a couple bucks so it may be worth a try.
