Hi, i have had my Jack Dempsey tank setup for a while now, the plants have been in there for months too.

The only lighing i have is one i think 40 watt bulb on my 75 gal. (This tank wasn't really made so i can have live plants) and there is no CO2.

I used to hae a pleco which would eat all of the algae in the tank but since the JDs have bred, he was too scared to come out of his hiding hole, so he didnt eat any of the algae, now he is dead....

But the problem now is, i have a brow algae growing on the tank glass and heater, it is just like a brown film, i also have a brown algae, more furry than the glass one and a bit darker, growing on the plants and their leaves.

Does anyone know what type of algae?!?! or even how to get rid of it without a pleco (i dont want the 100+ fry in the tank to die :screwy: )

Thanks for the help!

If it is hair algae thats a good sign (good water quality). Personally i like how small amounts of algae look on plants and decor, and I just clean the glass (or acrylic) to get rid of the rest. There are chemicals that are made to kill algae but may harm fish so scratch that. Maybe manual cleaning is the only option?? im sure there are some experts that will hook you up with pro info though:) good luck

Oh cool! good water quality! :clap
im worried now, the JD's are going to keep on having babies right?
that sucks....because theyre illegal here and i dont think there is any demand for the....what'll i do with the fry
maybe i should sell my JD's to a stupid pet store, and buy something worth selling and breeding in my 75 gal.

just curious, but why would jack dempseys be illegal in australia?

Only in South Australia.....Its BS!
Like many other fish which are illegal like Pirrana, Snakeheads, Peackock Bass, Dats, Dovii, Flowerhorns and LOTS more!
Apparently the fish will breed in our waterways....which probably dont even go higher than 24degrees C and in winter get to below 10 degrees im sure.
I mean for goodness sake we have trout in our rivers! thats got to give you an idea on how cold it gets!

And the stupid thing is, the people who go looking at fish stores, to see if they have illegal fish are fisheries officers.....the way you get a fisheries officer lisence is you go to a place, fill out a form, and then go to one or two seminars and you're a fisheries officer.

They dont check credentials, you could just be some random person.
And i have heard afish store owner say that he had a tank full of about 200 texas cichlid fry, and a fisheries guy came in and said what are they, and the store owner replied with, we use these fish as feeders lol, and got away with it, but if he had a tag on his tank which said texas cichlid he would have been busted....this same guy got his foot long red devil taken away and destroyed.....as i said its utter BS!

Well you could put in other plants to absorb the nutrients needed for algea to grow...thus killing off the algea or you could lower down your lighting some.
