hey all
i have algae on a bunch of my hygrophilia and sword plants and i cant get it off. my light is not overly on- at most 10 hours/day. any ideas?

Describe the Algae.

Is it a green matt. Brown. Hair like.

You can try controling the nutrients in the water column. Add more filteration or less feedings etc.

Are you using a sand which contains high amounts of silicon?

break up your light cycle, about half way into the day turn off your lights for 2 or so hours.so 4 hours on 2 off thenn 4 on.This will interupt the growth of the algea and cause it to die off.but you may want to do a couple of extra water change through the next week or so to remove the extra nutrients.I had the same problem and this worked.I dont run any kind of filter and havent for about the last 4 months so water changes are very important to this system.I do 25% a week.

You also run a non-filtered tank? Cool, me too, I just have a powerhead to keep the surface agitated. 25% water changes daily though....

its hair algae like the stuff you guys described. i do not have that sand stuff, i have smallish gravel and i have had numerous plants in it before with no problems. ill let you know if the light thing and the water changes work, but im running sponge filters and a canister on the thing, so its not my filtration thats a problem. maybe im feeding too much... but my koi angels are pigs...
thanks for the info
