What should I do about algae in a tank that can't have a pleco, such as my gar tank?

Your filtration and lighting is the problem. Fix that and you won't need a pleco.

You likely have too much no3 and light. Test your water and tell us how long the lights are on each day.

I would say get the siamese foxface but they will be eaten by the gars.

You could get a flagtail prochilidus, they do a far better job at cleaning glass than plecos. Or you could go for some nice soft subdued lighting, I believe gars prefere that anyway.
You could also reduce the amount of hours the lights are on for, or just simply get a razor blade and remove all the algae on a regular basis. I believe you can get them on sticks for use in Marine Aquariums.

Thanks,I do keep my lights on for a long time, usually 10+hrs a day. There only off when I sleep. I didn't want to cut back on light time so I'll look into those fish suggested.

I had a algae problem on my 120 so I`ve been monitoring how long the lights are on for, and make sure I get about 7-8 hours a day. they also get a few hours of daylight through the window

I have an over kill UV light system, kinda my bad when I didn't realize that I've been using UV light system rated for tank up to 9000 gallons on a 1000 gallons ...
