I am getting some green algae on the tank walls that is hard to scrap away. Is there a method or particular scrapper you would recommend? I usually just use a sponge but that's not cutting it...

You can buy plastic scrapers that work pretty well. The other option, which I use, is to buy a metal straight blade scraper and throw out the metal blade after each use or maybe 2 uses because they rust.

Is it normal to get this 'hard growth"?

It isn't abnormal. Your tank will go through phases where you will get different algaes. I have gotten this stuff at times.

The algae pads that were recommended above do work well, but it takes a bit more muscle.

The metal scrapers (paont chippers) are like a dollar or two at the home improvement store. Seems feasible to me... Won't scratch my glass?

Nope. The algae pads can actually leave tiny scratches in the glass if you press real hard, but the scrapers are good to go.

if your tank is glass just use a razor blade.

If you are getting algae like that its an imbalance between co2, ph or too much lighting. If you have co2 try turning it off for a few days. If you have more than 2 wpg try cutting back the lights a little bit.
