Algae scrubber for large tanks

Does anyone know if an algae scrubber can do the filtration of a really large freshwater tank without any other filtration system?

I mean running the water over a large area where algae grow under intense lighting.

You still need mechanical filters, and the water would have to be slow moving. How big an area depends on tank volume and bio load. Without calculating bio loads, I think this would be rather large and cumbersome (read costly). To many variables. Didn't NASA work with this years ago? I've seen the formulas and they made my head hurt.
