Hey guys, got rid of one of my tanks and decided to use my sun sun canister filter on my 120 just to have more filtration. Before it had a fx4, penguin 350, and it has an under gravel filter with 2 power heads on either side of the tank and two bubblers in the middle. The fx4 is on the right side of the tank so I figured I’d put the sun sun on the left side so I have even more filtration. My concern is, the filter came from a tank that had a green algae problem. I’ve cleaned off everything in warm/hot tap water, and got everything off that I could. I got most of it but noticed after the filter was in place the outlet still had some stuff on it. Should I be worried about the algae spreading to this tank or am I being a nervous nelly? Thanks guys.

Yes, it will most likely spread if the conditions in the current tank are favorable for growth. By green algae, do you mean cyanobacteria?

This stuff. I took the pipes back out and cleaned them in a water/bleach solution. Rinsed off well and put back in. No stuff on the pipes now. Hopefully nothing spread...

Yep, that appears to be cyanobacteria. Check this past thread out for more info.

I’ll take a look at that. I’ve never had algae problems in this certain tank, but did notice some pop up on the front of the glass months ago, and when I was doing my big cleaning, none to be seen. Not sure if this tank just doesn’t have the “good” qualities cyano is looking for. I’ll keep posted if anything happens. Thanks for the help

Rinse the filter with hydro Peroxide and you will be good!!

Not if it is already in the water column.
Something to do when moving filters to new tank with any type of algae involved. easy enough to pull intakes and other components and rinse and return.....but your are correct......not suggesting he fill his tank with peroxide!
