Hey guys im writing this for a freind but hes got a 150 gal tank and he does regular water changes but he has a constant problem with his water being competely green almost to the point where you cant see throught it. I told him that he needed to keep the light off for a couple of days even weeks. well he went three days and apparently there was no change in how green the water was and so he decided just to turn on the light. Now his jags are breeding and he cant see anything that is going on or where the babies are... whats the best way to get rid of this green water???

-Thanks, Jay

Barley straw is well known to reduce single celled algae, but it's not instantaneous.
When you say regular water changes, what is regular?
If your buddy feeds heavily, a 25-30% water change every other day might be needed, because nutrients and light are needed to produce algae.
For me 20% every other day, is normal.
Light duration or the proximity(or a shade) to a window may also need to be altered.

If theres babies in the tank I wouldn't consider treating the water. Huh, your in NC eh? Here in CA I have a similiar problem from the local water comp. water. A suggestion may be to treat the water beforehand. Outgas it for a day or two. If not maybe go RO water. But then your getting into expense.
