Snails certainly help, algae eating fish are also a good option. Choose wisely according to the size of your tank. Some, e.g. Chinese algae eaters can get real big. Athers, like some plecos, don't eat much algae if there is enough other food (leftovers, pellets) around.
First and foremost, check your water for nitrates and phosphates. If they are high, increase water change intervals and think about adding fast-growing plants (esp. floating plants) to reduce the nutrient load.
