I am trying to set up a new tank when I tested before adding any fish it had a very high pH and the water was hard .
i got a pH buffer to fix it but how do I keep it for spiking with every water change?

well theres a couple things you could do. IF thw water is hard alot of those producs wont keep the pH low because they dont effect the hardness and it jsu goes back. There are water softning pillows, that you can put in your filter that as far as i kno obsorb the KH and then you just put them in a saltwater bath to recharge it, alot of people use peat moss too. if i were you i would jsut do little waterchanges to not make a big impact,or have a reseviour of soem sort to pre treat the water to get it were you want it befor adding. other them that maby a RO unit and mix it with water. hopefuly soemone els has more ideas, thats all i can think of.

thanks its been a while since I had fish and Im not even shure the gold fish I had when I was six should count I am glad i tested the tank before adding my starter fish though.
i hope the cycle goes better.

Hey no prob. By the way how hard is your water? because if ints not too exptream you could be jsut fine keeping it as is. what kidna fish do you plan to keep? alot of fish are pretty addaptible to verious pH's, its usualy better to have it a bit off and stable then try to keep it different ands have it swing up and down. as for the cycle harder water should be fine, because as waste breaks down in the tank it through the bacteria it will soften the water aswell, thats why some people with a heavy bio-load keep crushed coral and oyster shell in their filters. The downside is the higher the pH aafter 7.0 the more toxic it becomes. I would sujest a fishless cycle in that case. I kno your pain I have a pH of 8.0 and a kH of 10 degrees out of my tap, Im on well water.

Oh Iv neevr used a reverse osmosis unit but as fare as i kno its a filter you run ur tap onto and ity pushes your water through a extreamy small membrain that basicly filters out anyhting and everyhtign in your water so you are left with essentialy pure water, but you have to add bac all the minerals ect because everyhting is gone, thats why soem people with hard water ect use half RO and hald tap water, atleast im pretty sure thats the deal with it, maby someone will add their 2 cents if im wrong.

Why dont you let the pH settle at whatever it settles at? it will be quite stable that way. ie just throw the pH test kit away. (I am not trying to be funny)

Thanks After checking info on my planned fish in this forum and checking the pH myself I have decided the person running my water test didn't understand what she was doing. my pH is about 7.6 and the fish i plan to get will do just fine oh and The person I dealt with today gave the same advice of leaving it alone.
The two Gourami don't seem to mind and brichars can apparently live in a pH even higher than that, once my tank cycles of course
So my tank should be cycling and I have fish.
now for the hard part waiting for my tank to cycle so I can get a brichar.
Also I have know Idea how to do a fishless cycle so the gourami are helping they are also neat topwaters
