Hello,
Went through the stickies again and came up with a new idea. All characin tank!

I see a common thread with armatus, dorado, and ATF. All prefer high oxygen levels, fast current, and are slow growing.

Could I put all of these fish together in one tank due to their similar requirements?

What other characins could I add?

Thanks!

Its possible, although risky depending on the temperment of the individual fish .... also the ATF would have to be your first fish and I'd get him to 12 inches, then add a 6 inch Dorado and Armatus, since ATF's are extremely slow growing and easily spooked by larger and more bold predators

Armatus can't be put with any African tiger fish unless the African tiger fish is a lot larger because Armatus grow very fast. I know ATF can be placed with red tail tat payaras, rhaph payaras, scomb payaras, red and yellow tail barracudas, pink tailed chalceus, Apollo shark, tri color sharks, barbs, silver dollars, tarpons. They should all be around the same size with the ATf being the largest if that's going to be your main fish. I'm sure there is more and I hope some people can chime in I'd love to get more tankmates for my tigers

Tarpons will rapidly outgrow the atf as well. Just wanted to clarify that. They're generally peaceful, but they are serious growers. For the most part you've hit the nail on the head with what they can be kept with. Mahseer are a good match as well.

Asthe others have said, the tiger needs to come first. Atf are painfully slow growing and very flighty and skittish. If you combine those factors you get a fish who tends to end up as a snack for its tank mates.

All of these fish aren't slow growing. Some payaras and dorados grow frighteningly fast.

With the tiger and armatus, the armatus will grow fast and out grow the tiger if you start them at the same size. My Goliath is now 13 inches but its taken almost 2 years were the armatus only took 9 months to hit a foot. And the Goliath might be the only tiger suitable to be in with armatus since they heavy and thicker then the others. And don't make the mistake of putting 2 or more armatus together, they will blind and even kill each other some people say you can but those are people with 5 or more together. You could try redtail payaras too. Yellow tail cudas are good fish to keep too, I've never had a problem.

I can vouche for tarpon growing VERY fast! And they get huge, bigger than ATF's so tank requirements are something to consider as the years go by ... I heard of one reaching 52 yrs old! Basically means my tarpon is going to outlive me! .... gonna have to make sure I have kids so I can pass the torch on! Or it falls on my lucky fiance, which she wont like! But I'll be laughing from the grave! Lol!

Curious as to why the tarpon keeps coming up since it is not a characin but anyhow I've tried an all characin tank in the past.I've had red tail tats, armatus, brycon and a dorado...The dorado has the potential to destroy all of the other fish....including an armatus of equal,if not larger size.Mine almost constantly harassed the other fish and even snatched food from their mouths.I suspect behaviors would be different in a massive tank though.

I strongly suspect that it is because they just work so well together IMO. I had a tarpon before and I adored that fish. It was absolutely vital to my getting Max onto pellets. He was also wonderful at taking the beatings that a tigerfish going through pellet training can dish out. That tarpon was a first rate hoss. I lost him to a gap in my lids. I still miss him. :(

I hope to have more someday, I'd like to have one of each type.

it can be risky. You can expect ripped fins, and missing scales at the minimum.
