I have a 55G that I want to stock with Cichlids, but I want a mix of colors. They can't grow much bigger than 5-6in and I will not be upgrading the tank.
I like the Yellow Labs and the Blue guys. So which Cichlids can go with whom? Thanks!

this is for SA cichlid and CA cichilds not African cichlid.

I am asking about all Cichlids, not any specific ones. I know you can keep all sorts together, no matter where they are from. As long as they have similar requirements.

If this post is in the wrong place, then a moderator should move it over. But there is no area for all Cichlids, so nothing I can do.

oh ok what i have in mine is a EBJD, pike cichlid, severum and a salviniXfiremouth.

in general, most SA/CA will grow larger than 6-7". there are dwarf cichlids but alot require special care, very acidic and soft water. i'f recommend africans. they generally stay smaller and are very colorful. you generally want to overstock with africans to cut down on aggression. too little in the tank and you will end up with one fish.

Oh, ok. What Africans do you recommend then? How many of each kind and do I need to have a certain # or males and females?

you have more options for SA/CA cichlids than you have been advised, they generally dont mix well with the old world cichlids though.
some fish include convicts, firemouth, blue acara, honduran red point, port acara, discus, rainbows, nics and many more. some of these may hit the larger end of your requirements though.
there are also families of fish such as cryptoheros and geophagus that you may want to take a look at.
aggression is an issue with putting lots of them together but you can develop great tanks with a few different species.

african old world cichlids such as malawi will give probably a larger variation of colours due to stocking densities.

Agreed with this...I will add that if you go the African route the general rule of thumb is 1 male to every 3+ females, New World cichlids are generally pair fish while the Africans are harem breeders.
