Don't get DLP or projection you will regret it.
Some Plasmas have 1080p, but it depends on your needs man.
If you have the space and just want a huge screen then DLP's will work, but if you have light coming in from windows in that room forget it.
Same goes with Plasma, you need a darker room to really get the full effect.
I say get an LCD. I bought an Olevia 32" which is just an LG LCD with a different name on it. WHen I bought my TV a year ago I think only Sony, LG, and Samsung were the ONLY producers of LCD screens (just the LCD screens, they would package and sell them to different copmanies and they would do the rest and put their name on it).
My dad has a 52" Sony XBR3 or 4, I can't remember, but honestly I can't really tell the difference. I play my 360 on both and the only advantage I found on his was that you have the option for noise reduction which takes away the scattering pixels in some games (Mass Effect). And also everything in HD is only in 1080i so it ends up upscaling everything anyway.
Now don't get me wrong, 1080p IS a better pictures, it is just that our eyes have a hard time telling the difference, especially when you make the jump from one sdtv to any hdtv, you will be amazed.
By the time everyone gets 1080p there will be another HD out anyway, they already have it on moniters, but the problem is the content. Nobody (no mass media like Fox, ESPN etc.) is even at the 1080p stage so this new resolution has even less media for it (pretty much none). But its just a matter of time.
I say just get a 720p (aka 1080i) LCD. You can hang it, they are the brightest, never wear out, no chance from screen burn, no glare, 180 degree viewing angle, they are the best , but they do come with that price tag. I was lucky and got mine for about $500 a year ago because it was a floor model. I think my dad's was about 3 thousand. So yeah they definitely range in price, but my suggestion from playing video games, watching movies, and watching TV on both, just get the 720p because thats all they broadcast anyway, and the jump from SD to 720p is obvious while the jump from 720p to 1080p is very very subtle.
