Hi all

I caught the disease to late was treating the with anti ich meds.

They all died.
I read on the forums that if you dont have fish in your tank the the parasite dies. I kept on with the treatment. How long will it be before I can add more fish. Please advice

The life cycle of the 'ich' is about 3 days...it basically falls off the fish then floats to the bottom, if it doesn't find a host, it dies. I would give it a week or two, but I would also raise the tank temperature to 90 degrees as this will also speed up it's life cycle (as long as their truly are no fish or plants in the tank) adding some aquarium salt (not marine) will also help, as they can't survive the salt dose (allegedly)...I usually do the 10 days holding at 89-90 degrees after salt dosing, then start water changes to get the salt out and bring the temp down. Most fish tolerate aquarium salt well, where as the parasite doesn't. Good luck, sorry for your loss.

just as a tip, I don't try and add anything 'unnatural' to my tanks, if a fish is so severe that it needs dedicated treatment, I remove them and treat in a smaller tank...or quarantine tank...heat and salt will cure most ich cases IMHO...I would not add more fish until the water temp and salt are removed from the tank...give it AT LEAST 2 weeks and get it back to normal temps with lots of water changes before adding more fish...even then...start slow. What size is the tank? what type of fish did you have? Maybe we can suggest some hardy fish to start out with that are as close to 'bulletproof'?

Yes ick killed ur fish but how did they get ick? You must change the water Atleast once per week.

Hi the lfs I went to get medication told me the rosyfin tetras they have also developed ich maybe from fish being shipped to them.

I dont have any fish in my tank anymore, I did a 75% wc today and added some extra salt. I added another dose which requires a 50 % wc after three days which I will do sunday or monday night. i will then leave the tank till next weekend to get some new fish I am sure by then it will be gone. As I read the ich will die withing 3 -4 days if it cant find a host. So I am 99% sure I will be safe for adding fish next weekend.

I do 2 x 20-25 % wc weekly so it is not my water quality that caused it.
