I've got a Clear For Life Uniquarium - which means it's got a built in wet/dry in the back of the tank.

I've converted the wet/dry from bioballs into a refugium with some microalgae and live rock - which seems to be doing well.

The problem is there is only one skimmer that works with this system, and it is designed for this specific tank. I'm running a Rio Venturi 600 on it (which was included with the skimmer). Instructions say to set the collection cup 1 1/4" above the water level, but when I do that - even at a full draw on the pump - I get no bubbles coming up through the skimmer.

Unfortunately, there is no way to lower the skimmer further than from where it is due to the mounting system - I'm wondering if I should upgrade to a stronger pump, say the 800 series. Or if anyone has any experience with these.

The only time I do get collection is when I forget to turn the skimmer off after adding strontium, calcium ect.

This is on a 50 gallon system, where I perform 5 gallon changes once a week. Everything in the tank itself is thriving, but I"d like to get this skimmer working considering I paid for it.

I'm not familiar with skimmers at all - I originally thought you were supposed to leave the slime it developes on the skimmer, but was told that you should clean them once a week later on by some one I trust in the hobby.

Any advice or recommendations would help. Especially from folks who might have experience with these systems.

In the future I'm going to upgrade to a plumbed 90 gallon and use this tank as a large refugium - as well as upgrading to a much larger skimmer.

Do you have the airline going to the pump? Is the other end of the airline above water level? Sometimes you have give skimmers time to break in but you say you don't have any bubble going through your skimmer.

It's getting air and setup correctly - the pump just doesn't seem to be strong enough to push anything into the collection cup.

Oh you just need to give it some time like a day or two. First you have to break it in. You have to adjust the water level so the water sits inbetween the first and second chamber. I did this for 24 hours. (That's the break in period) Then I adjusted the water level so the bubbles are about a quarter inch high in the little cone chamber thingy and just let it stay there. You should get some waste in about 24 to 48 hours. Some skimmers are very sensitive to water levels. If it changes it will stop. All you have to do is just leave it and it will start skimming again. If it doesn't just adjust the pump. I just installed my first skimmer this weekend. I installed it thursday night and by Sunday morning a dirty crap in a cup

wouldn't lowering the overflow's edge increase the depth of the water in the back?
