Thats terrilble.Did you buy these rocks or pic them yourself? Alot of rocks in the ground have veins of metal in them. This would only cause extreme algae and rust spots though.

Did you quarrantine or soak the rocks before you added them to the tank? What kind of rocks were they?

They were paving stones I bought at home depot. I broke them up and then soaked them. Then I rinsed them again and stacked them in my tank. It looked sweet until the fish died. It is safe to put fish in there now? I haven't touched it.

what do the stones look like? can u post a pic? someone may be able to tell you what kind of rock it is. did you do a vinegar test, or when you soaked them did you use a mild bleach solution?

I take rocks from different places all the time and pop them in my tanks. Doesnt seem to matter what type they are so long as they are boiled. We boil them for 20 - 30 min and then rinse them with tap water before putting them into the tank. We've had no problems with fish deaths, algae or rust. If you didn't boil them you may have introduced some microbes that could have killed your fish, especially if the rocks came from outdoors near water.

If the rocks were kept indoors they may have been treated with something rinsing wont take off entirely. You could also be using a bad type of stone that seeps into the water like limestone or something in which case the rock itself may be giving off deadly vibes.

They were paving stones for making a patio or sidewalk. One grey and one was redish. I just soaked them in a bucket of tap water, didnt use bleach or anything. I need to go get more test strips...im out.

Paving stones, like concrete? Yeah, that's like putting straight concrete in your tank... not good unless aged very well. If you stick to natural rocks, you really should have no problems.
