I have recently begun to formulate my set up for my fish hatchery/breeding program.

My first ? is this, how soon after the parent spit the fry do you remove them so as to stop them from snacking on the fry.

I will have many ? in the days to come but this was my first. At present I had 4 johani in a 75g to have lots of space to spit the fry. I removed the one mother a week after she spit hers and put her back in the main colony, do you have tanks set up to give the mother a break from breeding as well?

Hi. You may separate the fry from the parents as soon as they are free swimming but not later than a week or so. They parents are liable to eat their young as they prepare to have the next brood. Cichlids are highly prolific. So, if you are serious about this, you must have at least several tanks in your hatchery. Good luck.

what I am thinking is 10g holding tanks for the smaller moms and 20g for the larger.

I have a few projects going that I really have to decide which to focal point on, though the fish room looks to be first run.

I pulled the mom as soon as she spit the babies which leaves 3 moms in the tank with the fry, and I know what you mean about africans being busy. I put the mom who spit in the tank and now there are 2 more holding in the tank.

what I wonder is this, is there a set time where a person holds a mom to keep her from holding again so short after spitting. my johani are always after the ladies and the ladies are always holding?
