i was looking to hear from all of you on if you have your puffers in full marine and if so what type of filtration(HOB, canister, sump, sump/refugium) and what size tank you have them in. what kind of tankmates if any have you had luck with putting in there with them?

I have 2 juvenile GSPs in a 29g mid-brackish with Mollies & Ghost Shrimp. The shrimp get replaced with a dozen new ones each month & the Molly fry have about a 50% chance of surviving their first few days. Right now this tank runs dual Tetra 30-60 HOB's, but they will soon be replaced by dual AC50's. I also use a Tetra 10i as a utility filter for extra bio & polishing cloths. The Loaches in my office tank also really enjoy their salty little Molly fry treats every now and then...

Here's my experience with them:

i have had luck with tankmates with my 2 GSP and 2 F8 puffers luckily... so far. mine are in fully marine and have three different types of damsels(blue devil, four stripe and yellowtail), scooter blenny, a starfish, and a few saltwater ghost shrimp that they have let live for some reason, two of which are carrying eggs now! they are in a 29 gallon as well waiting for my 75 to finish cycling. i love these guys. have AC70, up to 55 gallon Marineland HOB filters with a HOB skimmer for up to 100 gallons. but when i do the move to the 75 i plan on doing a sump/refugium underneath the 75 in the stand, possibly up to a 40 or 45 gallon sump/refugium. i was thinking of using my 29 gallon as my sump/refuge but figured it was too high and not long enough

jus, since F8s do best at low-end BW, I suggest putting the GSPs (& friends) in the 75g & leave the F8s in the 29, lowering the SG to 1.005. The GSPs will eventually pick on them anyway.

With liverock & a good skimmer, you can dump the other FW filters. Not necessary for SW--all they are is nitrate factories.

yeah thats the plan. i did a really really slow acclimaton of the brackish to marine for the sake of the F8 and their colors are nice and bright, they are very active, eat every time i feed, come up to me when i come to the tank, chase the shrimp around etc. i was a little worried but not so much now because my 75 is just about ready as all my levels(nitrite, nitrate and ammonia) were at 0 ppm, and my ph is at like 7.8 or 8.0 so its cycling very nicely and the water is nice and clear. i put most of the live sand and a piece of live rock i had in the 29 in the 75 the other day as well as put one of my HOB filters i had on the 29 to help cycle the 75 with all the good bacteria. water is crystal clear so im thinking im ok, but dont want to risk it. since i put that live sand and rock with one of my filters from the 29 for the bacteria, should i still expect to see an ammonia spike before the water is good, or does that kind of negate that since the good bacteria is being introduced by me to help it out? but once i get the others in the 75 the 29 is being emptied and transferred to my room. we have like a zoo in half part of our living room. a 110 gallon fresh water tank my roommate has, like a 50 gallon with two red eared sliders we just inherited and now my 75 marine as well as my 29. plus in the kitchen we have my roommates girlfriends leopard gecko and like a 250 gallon(estimated) reptile tank in the process of being built for bearded dragons down in the basement waiting to be finished haha.

if i were to take off the HOB FW filters wouldnt that increase my levels? without the flow of the filters to move the water around wouldnt the bigger waste just rest on the bottom of the tank? might be ok with my water changes, but with adding the live rock and live sand along with my HOB filters, i dont have to do water changes nearly as much and my levels stay at very low numbers if i were to go even a month without a water change

You're mistakenly combining FW filtration with SW filtration. They are totally different. With FW, it's easy & cheap to keep nitrate down with WC. With SW, WC get quite pricey & you want as much biological filtration & as little mechanical filtration as possible. All your filtration is done with live rock & a protein skimmer.

so what type of media should i have in the filter boxes if any? should i just completely remove the filters off the back of the tank? i have kept the same type of filter media in it(sponge, carbon, chemipure and ammonia chips) in there and havent had any high levels of anything in my tank since it became fully marine. i was under the impression even after reading and researching all over the place that the filters i have are good for fresh or salt water. should i get some bioballs to throw in there instead of the carbon and ammonia pouches? should i keep the ceramic chips that is for the BB in there?
