Can anyone tell me the difference between an alligator and a shortnose gar? I'm checking out one in my LFS, around 5" with a very Florida-like posterior, but with a broad snout. I'm very interested since it's only $20.:grinno:

the main dif. is about 3-6'. i know the gator has multiple rows of teeth intead of one row like most other gar. more than likely you wont be able to see that though. a gator also has a wider snout. cant think of any major differences when theyre young though. i guess lets see what the pros have to say. can you get a pic of it?

oh yeah. it is more than likely a florida though. they are just way more common it the pet trade. how is it labled at the lfs?

go to:

www.primitivefish.com

look at gar section and compare the species pics.

chances are you are looking at a Florida gar either way--

It's labelled spotted gar, but the snout is way too thick to be a spotted. Anyway, I'll try to get a photo. By the way, how do I post photos here?

if you are in the philipines there is a good chance you're looking at a gator gar (provided the snout is as wide as you estimate). a pic would solve the ID issues easily--

i forgot to look at youre location. that could def. be something other than a florida or a spotted. what about a tropical?

Finally got 4 pics of the mystery gar. Hope we can ID it.
