anyone know where (online/or somwhere i can drive too, i live in southeast wi) i can buy sinking large pellets for an alligator gar? that is if such a thing exists. name brands? price? my ally is eating thawed out frog legs and fish from the bottom of the tank so i want to try a commercial pellet food also to add to diet. thanks

mark

they will literally eat anything!

you can try what ever pellot youd like, i personally like the hikari brands, but use whatever you like

i know they will eat practically anything!!!!! lol ive just been unable to find any large sinking pellet foods at the petstores in my area.. i will look up hikari. thanks! any others?

something that has good size to it.....seems those hikari pellets are pretty small (at least the pics i saw on one site.) like maybe at least an inch long?

well if your looking for long look for food sticks, but there are other pellots that range from sizes about 1/4" to almost 1/2"

Feeding off the bottom is really not ideal..I'm not aware of your tank setup but if it contains large diameter gravel this can cause issues. A floating food may be better to avoid any potential impaction issues.

How big is your Gar at this time?
I could offer advice on a variety of foods but need just a bit more info on your fish and tank set up.

gar is 18 inches.......120 gallon tank, temp around 78, currently eats live fish (goldfish, suckers, minnows, perch) thawed out frog legs, catfish fillets, thatwed out bluegill, and last night thawed out crappie) i was just asking about sinking pellet foods cause he will go to bottom of tank and pick up the thawed out pieces of meat. the gravel i just updated to larger pieces so he will have a harder time getting in mouth. he is pretty careful when he gets stuff off the bottom. just slowly goes down and picks it up (unless its been a few days ;) ) otherwise he loves chasing fish, and has taking frog legs and strips of catfish fillet off tongs.

Well you have few good economical choices.

Extruded broodstock feed, Aquatic stable MO pellets or what I would suggest...
A custom Gel diet
This I personally use as a staple Gar diet and just add a variety of stuff to it (Shrimp, krill, fish fillet, whole fish etc.).. It can be cut into sizes appropriate to your fish when prepared.

Commercial pellets will cost you four times as much as this will for the amount you get.

is the gel diet messy? it seems that it would be
