hi all, I'm quite newbie to this kinda fish and the forum also. I've got 2 feet alligator gar (I've him for 7-8 month)

I wanna know about

-Do this gator school?? I've seen many gars do school but I dont really know about this guy.

If yes should I find him another gator gar to be as friend or somekind?? btw he now looking fine, get used to human, and can eat his food from hand (Of course a big food so he wont bit me)

-with a maximize pond for him, how long can he lived ?? Especially in my country it's quite hot and no cold winter. but as far as I know their origin temperature range almost looks the same as mine, 20-34 celsius(correct me if I'm wrong I've seen this gator live around 16-30). right now I've only 3x.15 metre pond how long can this pond handle him?? caz my futher pond need to prepare for years.

Thanks :D

I've seen them kept together, but alone is fine as well. They can handle cooler temps, but warmer is better for them. You'll need a MUCH larger pond very soon. I'd say something well over 12,000 gallons or (at LEAST) 8 meters long x 4 meters wide x 3 meters deep.

Taoz, what part of bangkok do you live. I didn't know they sell Alligator gars in thailand. I was there in 2002. I went to สวนจตุจัตร they have a lot of rare fish there. I have a florida gar, but it thinks its too cold here for a pond. Well good luck. Hey try to send a picture of your gar. Gars are very interesting fish.....

Thanks for reply

I've seen they live together as well, one of my friends also got a bigggg pond...... well no..it's a big pool, so he have 5-6 of gators but also some other species around gators size and temper. but I cant observe how gator's do with his own kind. only saw when they coming up to breath the air one by one, or came nearby his owner ask for feeding.

-I've seen some smalls that born and live together. when feeding time some of them bit the same prey and no one step away til the prey ripped apart that's funny(well...quite horror for someone)

-but the action I saw from other pond is not really the same. once they reach their prey the same one, while there's contact between each other both of them'll do like skit and "dash" away.... this part I saw from another place, the owner put 3 gators in his pond. (his 3 gators gar arent brother, owner bought from 3 stores)

they can live together ofcourse, but there's big different about schooling or not.
those who school = they'll stand together while panic, danger situation, feeding. or territorial. I've seen small florida act like this in Aquarium, also fleet of Longnose do in store's pond.
those who not = just solve their own problem, stay together caz just same self-intention like "hi, how u doin, eat, poo, goodbye".....seems like my friend's gators do this kind. lol

If alone is really fine so my bigger pond will be only for him. even If I have 2 or 3 I will do the pond for 2-3 gators dont worry that I gonna stunning him. I really concern about schooling behavior caz it's fun and the fish that do school look great when it has team.

I live around Ramkhamhang. And about สวนจตุจักร, I've just start to interest about gars since last year, so I dont know that in 2002 would have gators or not. at that time I only looking for Betta and non-hybrid Cichild (right now still do love them)

btw now so many gars sell in here...so do the Cuban, Shortnose, Longnose(some store sell Shortnose but named them as and Alligator gar -''-. I've heard from Pro that many gars will be place here like tons around June July. and seems like there's a few gar farm in here but not sure bout that, I've never saw anyway.

my English get very rusty.... sry If I made u guys dizzy, I already do mine. :uhoh:

I havent take a look around the market for 4-5 months, caz of hard study. I just finish my Law exam so plan to go take a look, may be some photos if they not gonna kick me out.

-Snakeheads If you mean that Giant snakeheads, they always b there for anyone, can buy from small one in cheap like common aquarium fishes.(even they grow like hell)
-Peacock Bass not so much available, 20-200 bath (0.5-5$) depend size.
-aros always own their price like decade, even full of !!£@$%!!! hybrid cross breed are everywhere and trendy for Thailand Aquarist.
-Catfish should be back soon, last time I checked was too expensive like double cost.
-Gars, I heard that small fleet of gators has arrived lol, I really wanna check this out.

btw since I havent got much time to walk around, I spent money (for fishes) to a guy I trusted from internet. it's easier and he can satisfy me a better choice for monsters lol. If you guys came here and cant find something, may be you do like me would b better.

Sorry Anne, but Alligator Gars can live over 100 years. I talked to the curator of freshwater fishes at the Stienhart Aquarium in San Fransico,California and he told thier Alligator Gar was way over 100 years old !
