Alligator Gar Rampage

Hi MFKeepers,

I did a very stupid noobie mistake in taking care of my gar. First I thought if I put my feeders in the tank, 8 of 'em, my gar would only eat like one or two, since I already fed him 1 feeder prior. Then I went outside my room to do something and then when I returned, all the feeders are gone. My gar's belly is now bloated.. Is this dangerous? What should I do? That's a total of 9 feeders, 4 1-inch Carps and 5 1-inch gold fish...

you should be okay. If he was full he wouldn't keep catching them.

that's seem normal for young gars! just don't do it next time!

feeding them with alot of food is nothing...when young,whats the size?

Should be fine as long as the spines on the goldfish don't puncture anything; minnows/rosy reds will work better.

did you quarintine the feeders first?? The WORST mistake is to have paracites that will kill the gar.

how big is the tank noob? to fully max out your gars potential i would only use feeders as little as you can to start out. using things like shrimp full of protien will help propell his growth. as fish are young eating whole fish are possibly dangerous to them (most dont realize the the posion fluid and soiled "crap" in feeder fish). good luck man

You should be able to train it to take pellets, shrimp, and fish fillets now; it's certainly large enough that it will not require food available at all times.
