I just bought my first alligator gar. He is about 5". I am a little worried I won't be able to keep him very long as I know how big they get. I have him in a 180 gallon tank. Can anyone tell me how fast they grow? Will I be able to keep him for a couple years or is he going to grow faster than that? How big is he likely to get in a 180 gallon tank? And finally, does anyone know why they are illegal in Washington State?

He can easily reach 2 ft within 6 months if fed properly. I got mine at 17", he is now 24" six weeks later. Now that he is 2ft I will stop the daily feedings and go to 3 times per week. I keep him in a 48x46x24 pallet tank(180g of water in tank) and do water changes 12 hours after feeding, incredible metabolism on these beauties.
