I have read various post, about how large alligator gar get in the wild. I know some of you keep, or have kept these gar. So my question is, what is the average size of these gar in the home aqurium? And how long did it take it to reach the size that it is at present? Thanks for your help.

welcome to mfk! :headbang2 I have some knowledge but as I havnt had one yet...Ill leave it to the experts!

Gator gars hit the 3 foot mark in 3 years. Then their growth rate decreases to where they'll reach the 6 foot mark at age 20 to 30 depending on diet, sex, average annual temp, etc.

A.Gars growth still confuses me. lol

You can check out Arapaimag's post. He has got a 10 year old gar which is only 38". http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?454032-oldest-gar-on-the-forum/page2
it should be confuse, I don't think it is clear that we know in what condition the gar will grow continuously with their age. Some member here have their gator gar stuck at 38'' while some(there was some post about a years ago) have their gar continue growing.
the cabela's near me have 3 5.5' gator gar in their 35k Gallon tank, and I heard that they were about 5' long when cabela's get them from Texas fish and wildlife 6-7 years ago!

Pond, not really suitable for a tank. Mine should be reaching 3' at 6-8 months.
Gators should not be in a tank, less you can have a tank width 1.5-2 x fish's length, cos gars don't flex that well.
Not to mention the glass thickness.
All in all, if you wanna use a small tank to house a big fish,..... its your fish.

I've seen big tanks; you can keep a gar in a tank. It's just a lot cheaper for a pond. I've kept my gator in tanks up to 90 gallons in the past 6 months. He's just breaking 10" now, so I'm preparing a 3'x3' pond. A 180 should last a year or more, but you'll need to have something 12'x24' ideally if you want to keep a 6' fish.

Well, if you can afford a 12'x24' and have the space for it, then by all means go ahead.
If you don't even have the space to start off with, why would you keep a gator when you can have all the other species?
And even if you have a 12' x 24', the next question will be if one wants to maintain it as a species only tank? Given the fact that gators do not com well with most other fishes.
In addition, 10" for a 6 month old gator? Seriously, is it really growing at the rate it should be?
90 gallons? So is there a plan install when it out grows the 90G?
All I'm saying is that one should not even start what he can't finish.

Sorry, didn't see that you have a 3' pond on the way. Anyway, 3' is not enough. And how many people have a pond in place?
