I´am thinkin of digging me a pond in my garden and wonder if the alligator gar can survive the cold winters of sweden as long as there is a hole in the ice for oxygen?

Uhm, if you didnt notice, This is the GAR Section and he said Alligator GAR.

But I dont think an Ally Gar could live in Sweden, as It's just to cold, even if there was a hole in the ice for the Gar to surface, I dont see it happening. If the water is freezing over, its too cold.

Gars are tropical fish and require warm water to survive

...some gar are tropical.

either way i agree, A. Spatula and ice water won't work.

alligateros are U.S natives they live in ALOT of places that freeze over if they couldn't survive it there wouldn't be any in the wild here people forget that they are from here and can survive water freezing very we'll as long as it doesn't freeze sold and the fish has enough room to swim it should be okay same with spotted gars and longnose they DEF can live in cold water

Rivers and lakes are not small ponds..Fish can find a happy place in multimillion gallon habitats. be careful about ever thinking "what works in the wild" will ever work in your case or circumstance in captivity.

As said by most here I would not try this one...It will not work out well at all....

richard,

slightly off topic...when gar are under a frozen body of water how do they come up for air? or is their metabolism just slowed down so much they dont have too?
